Liberia: From Birth to Resilience

The Birth of a Nation
Liberia’s story began in 1822 when freed African Americans, seeking freedom and opportunity, arrived on the shores of West Africa through the efforts of the American Colonization Society (ACS). They sought to create a new home where they could escape the racial discrimination of the United States. In 1847, Liberia became the first independent African republic, with a government modeled after the U.S. Constitution. Its capital, Monrovia, was named after U.S. President James Monroe, one of the early supporters of the colonization project.

However, the country’s early years were fraught with challenges. The Americo-Liberians, as the settlers became known, dominated the political and economic systems, sidelining the indigenous population. This created a lasting divide, as native Liberians struggled for representation and access to resources in their own land. Despite these tensions, Liberia stood as a beacon of hope and freedom in Africa, maintaining its independence during the colonial era.

Civil War and Devastation

The cracks in Liberia’s foundation widened over the years, exacerbated by economic inequality and ethnic divisions. In 1980, a military coup led by Samuel Doe overthrew the Americo-Liberian-dominated government, marking the end of more than a century of their rule. While Doe’s rise initially symbolized change, his regime became corrupt and oppressive, deepening the ethnic and political rifts.

In 1989, Charles Taylor launched a rebellion against Doe, igniting the First Liberian Civil War. What began as a political uprising spiraled into a brutal conflict involving multiple factions vying for power. Entire villages were destroyed, families were torn apart, and over 200,000 people lost their lives. The war left Liberia’s infrastructure in ruins, its economy shattered, and millions displaced.

Even after Taylor’s rise to power in 1997, peace remained elusive. A Second Civil War broke out in 1999, plunging the nation back into chaos. It wasn’t until 2003, after intense international pressure and intervention, that the war ended. Taylor stepped down, paving the way for a fragile peace process.

Liberia Today: Rebuilding from Ruins

Liberia’s post-war era has been a journey of recovery and resilience. In 2005, the country made history by electing Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first female president. Her leadership brought hope, and Liberia began to rebuild its schools, hospitals, and infrastructure. However, the scars of war remain. Poverty, corruption, and unemployment continue to challenge progress, and the healthcare system faces difficulties, as seen during the devastating Ebola outbreak of 2014–2016.

Today, under the current President, Liberia is striving to move forward. Youth empowerment, education, and infrastructure development are key priorities, but economic struggles persist. Yet, the Liberian people’s resilience shines through. Markets are bustling, children are returning to classrooms, and communities are healing.

Liberia’s story is one of survival and hope—a testament to the strength of its people, who continue to rise above their challenges, determined to build a brighter future for generations to come.

Transformational stories - Princess Madison

The Inspiring Journey of Princess Madison

Princess Madison's story is one of resilience, determination, and the unwavering spirit to overcome life’s greatest challenges. Born into a loving family, she grew up full of energy and curiosity, like any other child. But her life took an unexpected turn when she fell gravely ill. At the hospital, she was administered quinine drugs, a treatment meant to save her life. While the medication helped her recover from the illness, it came with a devastating side effect—Princess lost her hearing.

Suddenly, the world became silent for young Princess. It was a life-changing moment, one that could have shattered her dreams. But despite the immense emotional and physical challenges that came with her newfound reality, Princess refused to let her deafness define her future. She dreamed of getting an education and proving that her condition was not a barrier but a stepping stone to greater heights.

A New Chapter at School

Determined to continue her education, Princess Madison found her way to School, a Love World Missions institution that welcomes children from all walks of life. The school became more than just a place of learning; it was a sanctuary where Princess felt seen, understood, and supported. With the help of dedicated teachers and staff, she embraced her studies and adapted to a new way of learning, excelling in subjects that many would have thought impossible for her.

Princess did not just survive her circumstances—she thrived. Her perseverance inspired her peers, her teachers, and her community. Against all odds, she graduated with pride, a shining example of what determination and faith can accomplish.

Dreaming Beyond Graduation

For Princess, graduating from Sheila Love School is not the end of her journey but the beginning. She dreams of going to college, of proving to the world that a disability does not define one’s potential. Her vision is to pursue higher education, not just for herself but to inspire others facing similar challenges. She wants to be a voice for the voiceless, a beacon of hope for children with disabilities who feel limited by their circumstances.

Today, Princess Madison stands as a proud graduate, a testimony to what can be achieved when courage and opportunity meet. Yet, her journey is far from over. With the continued support of compassionate individuals, donors, and organizations, Princess’s dream of attending college can become a reality.

Her story reminds us that every child deserves a chance to reach their full potential, no matter the obstacles they face. By supporting Princess and others like her, we are investing in a brighter, more inclusive future for all.

The Bright Light in Little Morris' Dark World

In the small community surrounding Love World Missions, stories of resilience often emerge, but few are as heartrending as that of 7-year-old Vamah Morris. Now in the second grade, Morris has experienced a level of pain and trauma no child should endure. His young eyes have seen things that even adults struggle to process, and his small heart carries scars deeper than anyone can imagine.

Morris was born into a family that should have been his safe haven. But fate turned cruel when a heated fight between his parents ended in tragedy. His father, overcome with rage, did the unthinkable—he took the life of Morris' mother right before his eyes. In those terrifying moments, Morris not only lost his mother but also his sense of security, his innocence, and the life he once knew. To make matters worse, his father, consumed by his actions, threatened Morris’ life before being arrested and sent to prison.

Suddenly, Morris was alone in the world. No siblings. No relatives stepping forward to take him in. Just the haunting memories of a shattered home and the ache of abandonment.

A New Chapter with Love World Missions

When no one else was there, Love World Missions stepped in. The founder, moved by Morris' plight, made it their mission to provide the child with a second chance at life. Through the school, Morris was offered not only an education but also a chance to rediscover what it meant to be a child. The walls of Love World School became his sanctuary, the teachers his guardians, and his classmates his newfound family.

The Struggles Within

Despite the support, the shadows of Morris' past linger. At night, he wakes from dreams drenched in terror, hearing echoes of his mother's cries and his father's threats. In class, he sometimes stares out the window, lost in a world where he tries to make sense of what happened. His teachers have noticed how quiet and withdrawn he can be, yet they also see glimmers of hope in his bright, curious eyes.

One of his teachers, Miss Clara, has become a maternal figure to him. She often finds moments to sit with him after class, helping him work through his emotions through storytelling and drawing. Morris’ drawings often reveal a longing for family—a stick-figure mother holding his hand, a smiling sun above them, and a little house with a heart-shaped door.

A Glimmer of Hope

Despite his traumatic past, Morris is slowly learning to smile again. The other children at Love World Missions have embraced him, and he’s begun to form bonds that feel like family. His favorite activity is reading stories during group time, where heroes always overcome adversity. When asked why he loves those stories, Morris quietly responds, "Because one day, I want to be like them—strong and happy."

Morris is also beginning to excel in his studies. His favorite subject is art, where he pours his feelings onto paper, finding solace in the strokes of a crayon or the smudge of a pastel. His teachers encourage his talent, hoping it becomes not only a creative outlet but also a source of healing.

The Power of Love and Community

Though the road ahead is long and filled with challenges, Morris is surrounded by people determined to see him thrive. The founder of Love World Missions has begun seeking counseling services for Morris, hoping to help him confront and heal from his past. The community has also rallied around him, donating clothes, books, and even a small teddy bear that he now sleeps with every night—a symbol of comfort in an otherwise chaotic world.

For Morris, every day is a step toward reclaiming the life he deserves. He may not have his biological family, but in the love and care of those around him, he’s discovering that family isn’t always about blood—it’s about the people who refuse to give up on you.

A Message of Hope

Little Morris is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Despite witnessing unimaginable tragedy, he carries within him a spark of hope—a reminder that even in the darkest of times, love has the power to heal. As he grows, Morris dreams of one day helping children like himself, ensuring that no one else feels as alone as he once did.

In the words of Miss Clara: "Morris may have lost his family, but he’s gained a world of people who believe in him. And sometimes, that’s enough to rewrite even the saddest of stories."

From Hopelessness to Triumph: The Story of Lucky Kanneh, Christine Kanneh, and Jackson

For Lucky Kanneh, Christine Kanneh, and Jackson, the dream of education once felt impossibly out of reach. Their story begins in a small home filled with love but overshadowed by financial struggles. Each morning, they prepared for school with heavy hearts, knowing they might be sent home for unpaid school fees. The constant humiliation and uncertainty drained their appetite for learning and dimmed their hope for the future.

One day, with tears in their eyes, the siblings turned to their mother and said, “We don’t want to go to school anymore. We know you cannot afford it.” It was a heartbreaking moment for a mother who wanted the best for her children but lacked the resources to make it happen. The family’s future seemed bleak—until hope came knocking through the Visionaries of Love World Missions.

A New Beginning at Sheila Love School

Through the compassion and dedication of Love World Missions Visionaries, Lucky, Christine, and Jackson were welcomed into School. For the first time, they found a community that believed in their potential and provided them with the opportunity to pursue their education without fear of being turned away. The school became a safe haven where they could focus on learning, grow in confidence, and dream of brighter futures.

Today, all three siblings are proud graduates of Sheila Love School, a testament to the transformative power of education. However, their journey doesn’t end here. Sadly, many of these students even confess openly that it was only on the day of their school graduation they wore their ever first new clothing.

Like many other young people, they dream of continuing their education and attending college. With the support of well-wishers and donors, Lucky, Christine, and Jackson hope to break the cycle of poverty and build a legacy of success that will inspire others in their community.

Their story is a powerful reminder that education is a right, not a privilege, and that no child should have to sacrifice their dreams due to circumstances beyond their control. By supporting their journey to college, you can play a vital role in turning their dreams into reality and empowering them to create a brighter future for themselves and others. Together, we can ensure that no child ever has to say, “I don’t want to go to school anymore.”
